Microarc oxidation (MAO) Al2O3 coating is an effective approach to improve the performance of aluminum. However, some problems for MAO coatings continue to exist and require solutions. In this work, WS2 embedded in Al2O3 ceramic coatings is fabricated through MAO and characterized using x-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectrum. Moreover, various measurement tests, including hardness, friction and wear, polarization, and corrosion resistance tests, are conducted. The WS2 (2)-Al2O3 composite coating has shown enhanced mechanical performance and corrosion resistance compared with the WS2 (0)-Al2O3 composite coating. The enhancement can be mainly ascribed to the reasonably embedded WS2 with dense microstructure. Therefore, this work offers a new facile method for improving the performance of MAO coatings.
